There is nothing better than attending a function — notice “fun” in the word function? — that is both enjoyable and close to home. Well, there are two such goings on in Riverside this coming weekend and both will give you the opportunity to leave the cooking to someone else.

During late afternoon and early evening on Saturday, April 14, Husband Joe and I will mangia at the St. Mary’s Parish Center, 126 Herrick Road.

The Knights of Columbus will transform the room into a slice of Italy at their “Pasta Knight” dinner, I can attest to the fact it is buona (that means “good”). Those in attendance will eat well, enjoy live music and be able to participate in the many raffles.

Tickets are $8 in advance (stmaryriverside.org/kofc) or $10 at the door. Proceed benefit local charities.

The Knights of Columbus are a men’s group that you may be recognize by their fancy uniforms and plumed hats at special religious events. Their prime purpose is that of a service organization, both locally and citywide.

Sunday, April 15 will be another no-cooking day for me, because the Riverside Township Lions Club will hold its annual chicken dinner fundraiser at the Riverside Township Hall, 27 Riverside Road from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Nothing better than fried chicken (your choice of pieces), corn and all that goes with it, especially the fritters. Dessert will be your choice of cake, compliments of our good friends at Costco.

And what would a fundraiser be without a raffle, which for the Lions’ event continues throughout the day? Come with your family and friends and wait in anticipation for your ticket number to be called.

The Lions Club, which is open to both men and women, is a charity that focuses much of its efforts on helping those suffering from hearing or sight maladies. Check this week’s “Big Week” for ticket info.

Is it spring or what? Calendar says so, but the weatherman doesn’t seem to pull it off. How will the ivy be able to grow when snow covers Wrigley Field on opening day? We should have the sun shining on The Friendly Confines as we listen for the crack of the bat and watch the ball soar onto Waveland.

Ya think I’m ready for the season or what? Go Cubs, go!
