For much of my life, I have struggled with depression. But I don’t own a gun, and I don’t want to own a gun.

The political discourse enveloping us seeks to draw a direct connection between mental illness and murder. This false equivalence does a disservice to the tens of millions of Americans suffering from mental illnesses (including 16 million with depression).

We are also distracted from the real issue: Guns, and specifically assault rifles.

These weapons of war belong only in the hands of the police and the military. It is time to ban assault rifles.

Enough is enough.
