Needing a win against rival Oak Park and River Forest to clinch the West Suburban Conference Silver Division championship, LTHS coach Kevin Diete gave the ball to the Lions’ ace Grant Leader.
The University of Illinois-bound Leader came through with a complete-game gem in a 10-1 win over the visiting Huskies. Leader allowed four hits and struck out 12 to cap off a series sweep of OPRF.
Matt Piento (3-for-4, 2 RBIs), Bryce Moskiewicz (3-for-3) and Thomas Remijas (HR, 3 RBIs) led offensively.
LTHS (24-5) faces the winner of Juarez vs. Argo in the IHSA regional tournament on Wednesday, May 23 at 4:30 p.m. at St. Rita. With a win, the Lions advance to the St. Rita Regional final on Saturday, May 26 at 11 a.m.
LTHS boys tennis
Freshman Dominick Cuchran lost just one game in four matches en route to winning the Lyons Township Sectional in the IHSA Class 2A state playoffs.
The Lions also won the doubles title as senior Demetri Triantafel and freshman Ryan Cahill went 4-0. Their teammates, freshman Owen O’Connor and junior Luke Schlender, rounded off the Lions’ group of state qualifiers with a runner-up finish.
LTHS won the team sectional title with 32 points, followed by St. Ignatius (20), OPRF (17), Whitney Young (16) and Morton (11).
Nazareth boys tennis
The Roadrunners (21 points) finished second with three state qualifiers at the Fenton Sectional in the IHSA Class 1A state playoffs.
Sophomore Michael Mooney placed second in singles by winning three of four matches. He defeated Fenwick’s Carlos Gutierrez 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 in a compelling semifinal. Northside Prep’s Natan Spear beat Mooney 6-4, 6-3 in the final.
In doubles, the Roadrunners’ Jack Anderson and Johnny Hamilton went 3-1 to finish third. They outlasted Pierce Butler and Ryan Dunlap (Fenwick) 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the third-place match.
Along with Gutierrez, Butler and Dunlap qualified for the state tournament for Fenwick. The Friars came in fourth place with 17 points at the sectional. Northside Prep (24) won the sectional title.
LTHS girls soccer
The Lions won matches against Proviso East and Glenbard West to claim their own regional championship.
LTHS routed Proviso East 10-0 in the semifinals and defeated conference foe Glenbard West 3-1 in the final. The top-seeded Lions advance to the IHSA York Sectional where they will face Downers Grove South. With a win, LTHS moves on to the sectional final on Friday, May 25 at 4:30 p.m.
Fenwick softball
The Friars closed out the regular season with a 13-7 win over Vernon Hills. Kayley Sherwood had a huge day at the plate with three hits, two runs scored and four RBIs. Alyssa Stramaglia (2-for-4, 2 RBIs) and Rachel Martinez (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI) also contributed for Fenwick.
Fenwick (13-17, 4-10 GCAC Red) hosts a regional in the Class 3A state playoffs this week.
Trinity softball
Parker Phillips and Emely Martinez drive in two runs apiece in a 14-4 loss against Harlem at the Ballpark at Rosemont. The Blazers host a regional at Triton College in the IHSA Class 3A state playoffs this week.
