‘Humbled” was the word Frank Gangware used when informed that he was going to be honored as the 2018 Riverside Person of the Year by the Riverside Township Lions Club.

Gangware, a Riverside resident for over 30 years, was chosen for his many years of volunteerism to the community and the Riverside Presbyterian Church.

Among many his many years of service, Gangware has been active with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He was a driving force in recreation within the village, serving for many years on the Riverside Recreation Board and helping guide it through some rough times.

He volunteered as a coach for baseball and softball teams and took time to be on the Riverside Little League’s board of directors. A member of the Riverside Township Lions Club, Gangware is currently one of the club’s directors.

He and his wife, Claire, also enjoy getting dressed up go dancing as members of the Riverside Dancing Club.

He is an active member of Riverside Presbyterian Church, serving on its Board of Elders and the Board of Deacons.

The Riverside Person of the Year is chosen by a committee of Lions Club members who seek out and review nominations for the honor. Nominees need not be Lions Club members; any organization or individual may submit an individual for consideration.

Names may be presented to the Lions Club any time during the year and are kept for review. Selection of the winner occurs in the spring and the announcement is now made at a Riverside Village Board meeting.

Gangware’s duties as Person of the Year are simple and enjoyable. He will ride in Riverside’s Fourth of July parade and he will be honored at a dinner at the Riverside Golf Club after Labor Day. The date has not been set, but the date and ticket information will soon be announced.

“I feel undeserving to be part of it,” said Gangware, but that type of statement shows why Frank Gangware is deserving to be Riverside’s Person of the Year for 2018.

Sharing in the joy of the honor is Gangware’s wife, Claire, and their children Caroline, William and Louise.
