Rev. John J. McDonnell, 71, who had been the assistant pastor at St. Louise de Marillac Parish, died on July 23, 2018.
Born in 1947 in Chicago, Fr. McDonnell (also known as Fr. JJ) attended St. Cornelius Catholic School and Quigley Preparatory Seminary North. He then went to Niles College and to the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.
Fourteen years into his priesthood, Fr. McDonnell joined the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome to pursue his doctorate in sacred theology.
Ordained to the priesthood on May 9, 1973, by John Cardinal Cody, he celebrated his first Mass at St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Chicago. After his ordination, Fr. McDonnell served as assistant pastor at St. Louise de Marillac Parish and associate pastor at Holy Name Cathedral Parish in Chicago, taught Christian anthropology and ecclesiology at the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, was the administrative secretary for Francis Cardinal George from 1997 through 2003, and served as pastor of St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish from 2003 until his retirement in 2017.
