RBHS cross country standout Tara Janney, center, finished second at the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division Championships with a time of 18 minutes, 48.3 seconds.

Senior Tara Janney finished second at the Metro Suburban Conference Blue Division Championships hosted by Elmwood Park over the weekend. Janney recorded a time of 18 minutes, 48.3 seconds, trailing only Rosary freshman Lianna Surtz (17.21.6)

Four other RBHS runners placed in the top 25, including seniors Nadia Kaczmarz (7th place/19.24.8), Melissa Oliveira Liz (21st/20.29.3) and Cora Lutes (22nd 20.29.5) and freshman Riley Gagne (25th/20.47.6).

The Bulldogs took fourth place in the team standings with 77 points. St. Francis (48) won the title followed by Rosary (56) and Wheaton Academy (74).

In the boys race, senior David Keen came in 10th place with a time of 16.62.6 for the Bulldogs. Conor Raymond also ran well for RBHS by finishing the race in 17:10.4 for 13th.

Teammates Peter Kallas (17.35.2), Chris Magno (17.35.9) and Quinn Vannice (17.41.6) finished 21st, 22nd and 24th, respectively, for the RBHS which earned fourth place (88) as a team.

Both RBHS teams will compete in a regional on Friday, Oct. 20 (11 a.m.) at Sundown Meadows Forest Preserve in La Grange.

Fenwick boys golf

The Friars capped off their stellar season by finishing 10th at the Class 3A state finals. Fenwick tallied a team score of 319 or 31-over in very difficult conditions at the Den at Fox Greek golf course in Bloomington.

Senior Josh Kirkham carded a 74 (2-over) to lead the team. Junior Jackson Schaeffer (80), sophomore Jake Wiktor ((82) junior Clark Davis (83) and senior Phil Sandor (84) were bunched together, posting scores in the low 80s. Senior Padraig MeEnery carded an 89 for the Friars.

Fenwick qualified for state with runner-up finishes in both sectional (304) and regional (304) competitions. During the regular season, the Friars went 11-0 in dual matches, highlighted by a 7-0 record in the Chicago Catholic League. The Friars also won invitational titles at Loyola and Mount Carmel and placed second at the CCL Championships and Homewood-Flossmoor Invitational.

LTHS girls tennis

The host Lions came in second at their sectional with 10 points. The doubles team of seniors Katie Materick and Lara Moreno qualified for the state finals by sweeping four matches. After dropping just four games in three matches, Materick and Moreno were tested in the championship match by Hinsdale Central’s Shalini Sahgal and Layo Adelakun.

The Red Devils’ top pair took the first set in a tiebreaker before Materick and Moreno rallied for a 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Hinsdale Central, which won the sectional with 24 points advanced six players overall (2 singles, 2 doubles) to state.

RBHS tied Downers Grove North and Glenbard East for sixth place at the sectional.

Fenwick football

Led by the offensive trio of Danny Cronin, Mitch Lopez and Marcus Wright, Fenwick edged Marmion 21-14 at Triton College in River Grove.

Cronin completed 7 of 12 passes for 99 yards and rushed for 52 yards on 14 carries. Lopez had 19 carries for 76 yards and Wright finished with four receptions for 48 yards.

Tom Dvorak, Konrad Skowyra, Jarod Taylor, Max Forst, and Danny Farnan led a strong defensive effort.

Fenwick (3-5) closes out the season at Mount Carmel on Saturday, Oct. 20. Kickoff is at 12 p.m. at Carey Field (6410 S, Dante Ave.) on the Mount Carmel campus.

RBHS football

Tied at 3-3 against visiting Wheaton Academy late in the first half, the Bulldogs gave up a touchdown before halftime to trail the Warriors 10-3. Wheaton Academy tacked on touchdown runs by Cristian Carstens and Ben Thorson in the fourth quarter en route to a 24-3 victory.

RBHS struggled offensively with less than 100 yards. Senior kicker Samuel Halwaji accounted for the Bulldogs’ lone points with a field goal.

The Bulldogs (2-6) take on Immaculate Conception (8-0) Friday, Oct. 19 at 7:15 p.m.
