Nazareth quarterback J.J. McCarthy lived up to expectations in his postseason debut. The sophomore completed 11 of 14 passes for 309 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-11 win over Andrew in the first round of the IHSA Class 7A state playoffs.
The Roadrunners (9-1) put the game away in the first half as McCarthy scored on a 9-yard run and tossed two TDs apiece to Michael Love (4 catches, 170 yards) and Diamond Evans (4 catches, 112 yards) to build a 35-3 lead.
Defensively, Nazareth limited the Thunderbolts to 121 yards on 62 plays.
The Roadrunners will host Hersey (9-1) in the second round this weekend (time TBD). Hersey defeated Lincoln-Way West 52-13 in its opener.
RBHS girls cross country
Riverside-Brookfield High School senior Tara Janney finished in 12th place with a time of 19:15.5 at the Kaneland Sectional in IHSA Class 2A competition on Saturday. Previously, she won the RBHS Regional with a time of 19:39.1. Janney advances to the state final at Detweiller Park in Peoria this weekend.
Fellow senior Nadia Kaczmarz finished the sectional race in 20:04.6 for 29th place.
The Bulldogs placed seventh overall at the sectional meet with 164 points.
Trinity cross country
The sophomore-laden Blazers continued to impress this postseason by placing fourth at the Fenton Sectional in the IHSA Class 2A state playoffs. Five of the team’s top seven runners are sophomores.
Sophomores Kate Foley (10th/20:02.7) and Sylvia Ritzler (12th/20:14.5) paced the Blazers. Regional champion/senior Alexis Cohn also ran well, finishing 14th with a time of 20:23.5. Courtney Yungerman (21:13.5), Hannah Roberts (21:46.7), Jessica Hoffman (22:42.9) and Annabel Halloran (22:54.6) also competed for Trinity.
Fenwick girls cross country
Senior Laura Durkin and junior Marie O’Brien recorded times of 18:46.6 and 18:52.7 to earn a trip the IHSA Class 3A state finals. The Friars just missed qualifying for state as a team with a score 167, trailing the final state qualifier Plainfield North (164) by three points.
Downers Grove South junior Brenna Cohoon was the sectional individual champion with a time of 17:01.5. Downers Grove South claimed the team title as well with 29 points.
Fenwick boys cross country
The Friars finished 11th in the team standings with a score of 343 at the Marist Sectional. Seniors Joseph Wermes and Eric Janc posted top times for Fenwick. Wermes came in 54th at 15:57.9 and Janc was 56th at 15:58.7. Teammate Owen Filbin finished the course in 16:26.4 (77th).
Nazareth boys cross country
Senior Scott Sikorski continued to run well for the Roadrunners this postseason. Fresh off winning the RBHS Regional in IHSA Class 2A, Sikorski placed 13th(16:07.3) at the Kaneland Sectional. He will be the Roadrunners’ lone qualifier at the state final this weekend.
RBHS girls volleyball
The Bulldogs lost to Downers Grove North 25-10, 25-17 in an IHSA Class 4A regional semifinal. In the quarterfinals, RBHS swept West Chicago 25-20, 25-15 as Kaiann Nash led RBHS with six kills. Julia Brom and Georgi Gomorczak contributed four kills apiece.
Fenwick girls volleyball
After cruising past Kenwood in their opener, the Friars outlasted Jones 34-32, 25-19 in the regional final at Argo.
South Carolina-bound McKenzie Moorman led the Friars with 16 kills. Zaria Glover (7 kills, 3 blocks) and Beau Vanderlaan (4 blocks) also contributed for the victors.
St. Ignatius defeated the Friars 25-19, 25-17 in the De La Salle Sectional semifinals. Fenwick, which won its fourth straight regional title under coach Kathleen O’Laughlin, finished 19-6 this season.
