Leo George Bodnar, 97, of Brookfield, died on Nov. 21, 2018.
Mr. Bodnar was born on Feb. 21, 1921 in Flint, Michigan to Louis and Pauline (nee Cvicek) Bodnar.
Called by his middle name “George,” Mr. Bodnar served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and, after retiring from the Illinois Bell Telephone Company, he began his second career as a volunteer at the Helping Hand Thrift Shop in Brookfield, where for more than 25 years he was known for his ability to repair watches, clocks and everything mechanical.
Later, he volunteered at the Community Shop in La Grange, benefiting the Community Nurse Health Center.
Mr. Bodnar is survived by his children, Jan (Ralph) Bone, Ron Bodnar, Karen Bodnar and Pam McIntire; his grandchildren, Ryan (Jenni) McIntire and Matt (Niki) McIntire; his great-grandchildren, Landon, Audrey and Chloe McIntire; his longtime companion, Barbara Szybowicz; his brother-in-law, Harley Higgins; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
His family would like to thank his neighbors on 27th Street in Brookfield for their generous support and assistance during the last few years of their father’s life.
Services have been held. Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
Memorial donations are appreciated to the Helping Hand Center in Countryside, Pillars Community Health in LaGrange, Catholic Charities or to an organization of the donor’s choice.
