A 19-year-old Broadview man is in critical condition after being shot at least twice in the abdomen while in a car on Forest Avenue in Riverside on Saturday at about 7 p.m.

Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said that at this time no eyewitnesses have come forward and that two vehicles were seen speeding from the scene. Almost two dozen people called 911 to report the gunshots, and when police arrived they observed “shell casings all over the street,” according to Weitzel.

THe victim reportedly drove to his home in the 2900 block of 13th Avenue in Broadview where his mother called 911. Police have not been able to interview the victim yet, because he is undergoing surgery, Weitzel said.

Police recovered the victim’s vehicle in Broadview and reported that there were four bullet holes in the windshield.

At this time, police have no information on the offending vehicle. Detectives from the west suburban Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT), who were in Riverside investigating a home invasion on Friday, are now also investigating this shooting. Weitzel said police do not believe Saturday’s shooting is related to the home invasion.

“We’re still pieceing it together,” Weitzel said.
