A seventh-grade boy who shot himself in a bathroom at George Washington Middle School in Lyons early Wednesday afternoon has died.

Lyons District 103 school board President Marge Hubacek confirmed late Wednesday afternoon that the student has died.

Before the student passed away District 103 sent a message about the incident to parents.

“It is with a heavy heart to inform the community that a George Washington Middle School student suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound at school,” the message said. “The Police, Fire & Emergency Services responded immediately upon being notified and the student was taken to the hospital where he is being treated.  School ended at its regular time and the district has assembled a crisis team to assist with students and facility during this crisis.  Please note that we were informed by the police not to divulge any specific details until further notice.  We just received notice and are immediately informing the community.” 

Hubacek said that Patrick Patt, who resigned as co-interim superintendent effective Monday, came back to the district Wednesday to help deal with the situation. Official notice to parents of the student’s death will be sent out soon Hubacek said.

A student at George Washington Middle School shot himself in a school bathroom Wednesday afternoon suffering serious injuries. 

According to a staff member at GWMS who asked not to be identified because of the sensitively of the situation the boy who shot himself was a seventh-grader. He apparently shot himself in a first-floor bathroom. The school is located at 8101 Ogden Ave., Lyons.

According to a staff member the student was taken to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood.
