North Riverside police took a man into custody on Wednesday afternoon after a roughly hour-long standoff at a house in the 2300 block of 9th Avenue.
Charges are pending against the man, who reportedly tried to harm a woman during a domestic altercation inside the home. The victim ran out of the house and alerted a neighbor, who called 911 at 1:12 p.m. The victim initially reported she’d been stabbed, but Police Chief Deborah Garcia said that the victim did not suffer any stab wounds and that she refused medical treatment from paramedics responding to the scene.
Police responding to the home at 2352 9th Ave. announced their presence and ordered the man to come out. He allegedly then barricaded himself inside the house, and police waited until North Riverside’s K-9 unit arrived to enter the home.
After forcing open the front door, police located the man in a locked bedroom. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, Garcia said. The incident was over by 2:15 p.m.
Garcia said police have received numerous calls and have responded to that address numerous times. Property records show that that the home is in foreclosure and that the village of North Riverside has a lien against the property.
Neither the man nor the woman lived in the house, said Garcia. The homeowner, who “allows people to come and go,” according to Garcia, was not present.
