Brookfield in photos
Compassion Factory Art Gallery and Studio, 9210 Broadway Ave. in Brookfield, in conjunction with the Brookfield Women’s Club, presents an exhibit of photos celebrating Brookfield in honor of last year’s 125th anniversary of the village’s incorporation.
The special exhibit, on display through May 27, features photos taken by community residents throughout 2018 and are grouped to highlight holiday celebrations, like July 4 and the Christmas holidays; special events, like the farmers market; and organizations, like Little League.
Also featured are books of photos collected by the Brookfield Women’s Club throughout the decades.
A reception, free and open to the public, will be held Thursday, May 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. Normal gallery hours are Thursdays from 4 to 9 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and first Fridays from 7 to 10 p.m.
LTHS, LaGrange Legion mark Memorial Day
The Robert E. Coulter Jr. American Legion Post 1941, of LaGrange, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, and Lyons Township High School will mark Memorial Day on Monday, May 27 with a pair of ceremonies.
The day begins at 8:30 a.m. at the high school’s North Campus, 100 S. Brainard Ave., with an honor roll call of LaGrange residents who have died while serving the nation, a 21-gun salute and the playing of “Taps” at the flagpole.
American Legion Post 1941 will celebrate its anniversary at its headquarters, 900 S. LaGrange Road, at noon. The ceremony will recount the story of Robert E. Coulter Jr., an LTHS graduate who was killed while piloting a B17 bomber in action over the Mediterranean Theater of Operations in 1943.
The ceremonies are open to the public.
Walking tour of Riverside
The Frederick Law Olmsted Society kicks off its 2019 series of docent-led walking tours of Riverside on Sunday, May 26 from 2 to 4 p.m.
On this date, enjoy a guided tour of the village north of the BNSF Railroad tracks. Meet at the Riverside train station. The cost is $20 per person ($15 for 62+ and Olmsted Society members). Special custom tours available at $25 per person based on requirements.

‘Calendar Girls’ at Brookfield Parks and Rec
Brookfield Parks and Rec continues its monthly movie series for seniors with a screening of the 2003 comedy “Calendar Girls,” starring Helen Mirren, Julie Walters and Linda Bassett, on Thursday, May 23 at 10 a.m. in the council chamber of the Brookfield Village hall, 8820 Brookfield Ave.
The film tells the story of a local women’s organization whose members become a media sensation after producing a fundraising calendar featuring club members in the nude.
Free and open to the public. Free popcorn and coffee.
Trivia Night in North Riverside
North Riverside Public Library will host a Pub Trivia Night on Friday, May 24 at 7 p.m. at Tipster’s Village Pub, 8839 Cermak Road in North Riverside.
Teams can be up to six people. All are welcome. If you don’t have a team, they’ll find you one so you can vie for North Riverside’s trivia crown.
