Summer follows spring on the calendar, but lately the weather has not always run true to form. However, I’m an optimist. I’ve finally put my snow brush away and I look forward to this weekend as the beginning of summertime funtime.
Memorial Day, which will be observed on Monday, May 27, signals the beginning of a more relaxed time of year. School will soon be out – RBHS seniors graduate this Friday – and the days ahead will be filled graduation parties, Little League games, barbecues and outside activities.
On Monday, communities in our area will be holding ceremonies to recognize those who gave their lives in service to the country. This is a time for all of us to be thankful for those who have given their lives to preserve our freedom. Be sure to go to Riverside’s ceremony on May 27. Check page 5 for the details.
More sure signs summer is upon us: Riverside Swim Club will open this weekend. It always amazes me that, no matter what the temperature, there are those who will dive in just because the pool is open. Don’t forget an extra towel to dry off and keep you warm.
Another sure sign? Polar Bear, the longtime ice cream shop at 7901 Cermak in North Riverside, is open. Polar Bear is a small place with a big menu from sandwiches to burgers to nachos as well as ice cream treats. Be brave and order a butterscotch funnel cake sundae. You may have to wait in line, but it is worth the wait.
Look also, if you’re looking for something refreshing in Riverside, stop at to Aunt Diana’s, 29 E. Burlington St., for a soft-serve cones or Patty Bars. Or you could walk down to Empanadus, 7 E. Burlington St., to have a gelato.
Another sure sign of summer are all of the children who will be out in droves on bikes, rollerblades and skateboards. Let’s be sure to watch out for them.
