Movie in the park
Brookfield Parks and Rec kicks off its Movie in the Park series on Thursday, June 13 at Ehlert Park (Elm and Congress Park avenues) with a screening of the 1995 animated classic “Toy Story,” featuring the voices of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen.
Bring your blanket or lawn chairs and join Woody and Buzz on their mission to bring back Bo Peep. Movies begin at dusk (around 8:45 p.m.). Free. Snacks available for purchase.
Brookfield goes country
Brookfield Parks and Rec continues off its 2019 Summer Concert Series on Friday, June 14 at 7 p.m. with the rocking country music of the Nashville Electric Company, who aim to please with their modern country hits as well as favorite country classics.
Concerts are held at the band shell in Kiwanis Park, at the corner of Arden and Brookfield avenues. Refreshments available for purchase. Kids activities. Free and open to the public.
Concert of classics
Unity Lutheran Church, 6720 31st St. in Berwyn, continues its True Unity Concert Series on Saturday, June 15 at 6 p.m. with a performance by soprano Michelle Areyzaga and pianist Dana Brown. Admission is free, but donations to start a music academy will be accepted.

River Lantern Ceremony
Commemorate the 100th anniversary of Riverside American Legion Post 488 and remember service members, family and friends at a special River Lantern Ceremony on Friday, June 14 at dusk (about 8 p.m.) in Swan Pond Park, just west of the Riverside Public Library on Burling Road.
Purchase a lantern for $5, light it and place it in the Des Plaines River. The lanterns will float downstream and be retrieved by volunteers. The event was rescheduled due to poor conditions on Memorial Day weekend.
Shred-a-thon and Bike Drive
Riverside Township will host a free Shred-a-thon event from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 15 in the rear parking lot of L.J. Hauser Junior High School, 65 Woodside Ave., in Riverside, as part of Cook County Township Day.
Midway Document Destruction will be onsite with a shredding truck to destroy paper documents for all residents of Riverside Township. Working Bikes will also be present to collect donations of unneeded, repairable bicycles to be redistributed locally and globally.
Aging Care Connections and Cantata Adult Life Services continue their Seminar and a Snack Series on Thursday, June 13 at 10 a.m. at Aging Care Connections, 111 W. Harris Ave. in LaGrange with “Energy Efficiency and Bill Lowering.” Learn about energy saving programs and receive a free energy starter kit. Free. Registration required.
