Picnic like a Scotsman
The Chicago Scots, the oldest nonprofit in Illinois, invites the public to its annual Summer Picnic on Saturday, Aug. 3 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the grounds of Caledonia Senior Living and Memory Care, 2800 Desplaines Ave. in North Riverside.
The event features live music, a selection of Scottish food and drink offerings, special performances by the Highland Dancers and a pipe band, a petting zoo, a pop-up mini-golf course, children’s activities and more.
Parking is available in the forest preserve lot with shuttle service throughout the day.
Group show at Compassion Factory
Compassion Factory Art Gallery and Studio, 9210 Broadway Ave. in Brookfield, resumes its calendar of art exhibitions with “Character Con,” featuring the work of Derail Howery, Jamie Primak, Josh Mettille, Naomi Martinez, Jeremy Johnson, Tony Smith and Travis Cakos throughout the month of August.
A free opening reception will be held Friday, Aug. 2 from 7 to 10 p.m. Gallery hours are Thursdays from 4 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Sounds of island life
Brookfield Parks and Rec invites you to bask in the cool and refreshing island sounds of Tropixplosion during the next summer concert at the band shall in Kiwanis Park, Arden and Brookfield avenues, on Friday, Aug. 2 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
There will be food and drinks for sale as well as activities for kids. Free.
Brookfield Public Library, 3609 Grand Blvd., celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock music festival with a special program on Monday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m.
Dean Milano provides a live music performance on guitar and vocals with a slide show featuring images from the 1969 event. Included are songs by Richie Havens, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez and many more.

National Night Out
Show your appreciation for local police officers and firefighters at the annual National Night Out event on Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ehlert Park Elm and Congress Park avenues in Brookfield.
Hosted locally by the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce, the event will feature a dunk tank, disc jockey, giveaways, concessions and entertainment by celebrity impersonator/standup comic Vito Zatto. The Oscar Meyer Wienermobile will also be onsite for photo opportunities.
National Night Out is a nonprofit crime prevention organization that works in cooperation with law enforcement agencies throughout the country.
Outdoor concert and car show
North Riverside Parks and Rec pulls out the stops on Thursday, Aug. 1 with its combination Outdoor Concert and Car Show from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Village Commons, 2401 Desplaines Ave.
Take in the classic cars while enjoying the 1960s sounds of Claremont Drive. Special concession for sale. Outside coolers not allowed. Free.
νThe Brookfield Historical Society will open the doors to the historic Grossdale Station, 8820 1/2 Brookfield Ave., to the public on Saturday, Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to noon. Tour the museum, which tells Brookfield’s story through photos, artifacts, maps and more inside the last original public building left in the village. Free.
