Berwyn police arrested two juveniles from Chicago who were seen running from a car reported stolen from a Riverside gas station during the early morning hours of Sept. 18 after that car crashed into a mailbox at the intersection of Ogden and East avenues while attempting to flee, according to police.
The alleged driver of the stolen vehicle, a 17-year-old boy, was charged with several crimes by Berwyn police, according to a report obtained from Riverside police, and turned over to Cook County Juvenile Justice authorities. It is not clear if the other juvenile, a 16-year-old boy, was charged.
Riverside police responded to the AmStar gas station, 3346 Harlem Ave., about 1:44 a.m. after the clerk there called 911 to report that someone had just stolen a white Kia, which had been parked out front, unlocked and with the engine running. The car was last seen heading north on Harlem Avenue.
The victim and the gas station clerk also told police that a red vehicle was at the pumps when the Kia was stolen and possibly was involved in the theft. Berwyn police reported pursuing both vehicles southbound on Euclid Avenue toward Ogden Avenue. The pursuit ended a short distance away at East Avenue and Ogden, when the Kia crashed and two people fled on foot. They were taken into custody, but reportedly were uncooperative with police.
Riverside police suspect that the two may have been involved in an attempted vehicle theft that was reported about 1:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Lionel Road just prior to the theft at AmStar.
In that incident, someone entered an unlocked van where the keys had been left in the center console. The owner, who was notified by a neighbor that someone was trying to steal his vehicle, found the van backed up and resting on a retaining wall next to his home, with the keys in the ignition and engine running.
The victim told police that the van had a steering problem and that the would-be thief likely abandoned the attempt after trying to drive it away.
Vehicle break-ins
A pair of Herrick Road residents contacted police to report that during the overnight hours of Sept. 17-18 someone had broken into their unlocked vehicles.
The victim in an incident from the 100 block of Herrick Road told police that someone rummaged through the glove box and center console and may have taken a checkbook. The car was parked in the driveway of her residence. The victim said a neighbor in the same block also had been victimized.
Meanwhile, about $10 in change and cash was taken from an unlocked vehicle parked in a driveway in the 300 block of Herrick Road.
A 37-year-old Cicero man called North Riverside police on Sept. 20 at 6:25 p.m. to report that while he was working out at Charter Fitness, 1770 Harlem Ave., someone shattered the front passenger-side window of his 2013 Chevy, ransacked the interior and removed his driver’s license and insurance card. Police reported that they located a second vehicle in the parking lot that also had been burglarized.
Arrested three times in one day
Riverside police arrested a 43-year-old Chicago man twice and Lyons police once on Sept. 18 after altercations at two residences in Riverside and an incident at a Lyons gas station.
About 2:45 p.m., police responded to the 200 block of Millbridge Road where a 56-year-old man accused the offender of trying to hit him over the head with a garbage can, gashing the victim’s arm in the process. He also was accused of damaging some lawn furniture.
While Riverside police attempted to locate the offender, Lyons police had already arrested him for allegedly damaging a vehicle at a gas station on Ogden Avenue. Riverside charged the man with battery and damage to property after Lyons police released him.
Around 9:20 p.m. that same day, Riverside police responded to the 100 block of Herrick Road, where the offender allegedly initiated an altercation with the homeowner, whose vehicle he was charged with damaging earlier.
Riverside police charged the offender with trespassing for the Herrick Road incident.
Ugg! Package stolen
A resident of the 4500 block of Sunnyside Avenue, Brookfield, contacted police on Sept. 20 to report that a package had been stolen from outside the front door of her residence several days earlier.
The victim told police that the U.S. Postal Service confirmed delivery of a package containing a pair of Ugg shoes valued at $90 on Sept. 14. However, when she arrived home that day, the package was gone.
These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside, North Riverside and Brookfield police departments, Sept. 16-22 and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.
