The Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad crossing at Maple Avenue in Brookfield remains closed to traffic two hours after an uncoupled freight car rolled through the intersection and derailed just east of the crossing on Dec. 27 at about 11:20 a.m.

Employees from the BNSF have responded to the scene to investigate how the incident happened, but police say it could still be a couple of hours before the crossing reopens.

The rail itself may need to be repaired and the freight car will need to be lifted by a crane to get it back on track.
