Happy birthday King!
North Riverside Public Library, 2400 Desplaines Ave., continues its annual tradition of celebrating the birth of The King – Elvis Presley – with a special movie matinee on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 2 p.m.
This year, watch Elvis sing, romance and swan dive his way through life while having “Fun in Acapulco.” The 1963 film follows the exploits of resort lifeguard Mike Windgren (Elvis) as he conquers his fear of heights, a holdover from his days as a circus performer, to become a cliff diver and win the heart of Margarita Dauphin (Ursula Andress).
New exhibit at Compassion Factory
Compassion Factory Art Gallery and Studio, 9210 Broadway Ave. in Brookfield, presents a new solo show of work by glass artist Margieann from Jan. 3 through Feb. 1.
Margieann creates unpredictable, whimsical glass pictures and shadow boxes that capture special moments in time and inspire delight and curiosity.
An opening reception with the artist will be held on Friday, Jan. 3 from 7 to 10 p.m. Gallery hours are Thursdays from 4 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free.
Winter gear collection
Lyons Township High School para-educators are holding a collection of new winter hats, scarves, gloves/mittens and socks for District 204 area children and adults in need. The drive continues through Jan. 14.
Drop off items at the libraries/discovery centers at either the North Campus, 100 S. Brainard Ave. in LaGrange or South Campus, 4900 S. Willow Springs Road in Western Springs.
Pillars planning gala
Get your tickets now for Pillars Community Health’s annual gala, “The Ball,” which will be held Saturday, Feb. 1 from 6 to 11:30 p.m. at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace.
Proceeds from the black tie-optional gala, which features live music, dancing raffles and casino gaming, will benefit Pillars Community Health, which provides health and social services in the western and southwestern suburbs.

‘The Nerd’ coming to TWS
“The Nerd,” the third mainstage production of the Theatre of Western Springs’ 91st season, was written by Larry Shue and is directed by Kevin Theis. It’s a side-splitting, rollicking comedy perfect for the dark days of January.

The Riverside Township Lions Club is collecting unwanted Christmas lights for recycling. Working and non-working lights that are for indoor or outdoor use can be dropped off at the Riverside Public Library, 1 Burling Road, or the North Riverside Public Library, 2401 Desplaines Ave., during normal business hours through Jan. 15.
