Michelle Maggos

The president of the Brookfield-LaGrange Elementary School District 95 Board of Education is resigning from the school board next month.

Michelle Maggos announced her decision at the board’s March 12 meeting. She will serve through April 16, the date of the school board’s next meeting.

Maggos, a LaGrange Park resident, was elected to the board in 2013 and named its president in 2016. She said she is resigning to dedicate more time to her service on the board of the South Berwyn Education Foundation.

A first-grade teacher at Piper Elementary School in Berwyn, Maggos is the teacher representative to the South Berwyn Education Foundation board.

Maggos, who has one year left on her term in office, also said that with the district’s construction program completed and full-day kindergarten up and running, now is a good time to leave the school board.

“This is a great board. They’re all ready to run with it,” Maggos said. “All my kids have gone and grown and it’s time. And I really believe in term limits.”

The school board will choose its next president at its April 16 meeting. The board has 60 days from the date of Maggos’ resignation to appoint someone to serve out the remaining year of her term.

District 95 Superintendent Mark Kuzniewski said Maggos’ work as a teacher gave her valuable insight and understanding as a school board member.

“I’m sad to see her go, but she has really ushered us through the construction process, the referendum process,” Kuzniewski said.

Board member Meagan McAteer, who was elected to the school board last year, said that Maggos will be missed.

“I’m sad to see her go,” McAteer said. “She’s definitely been a good conduit between the superintendent and the rest of the board and she’s been receptive to new ideas which is very helpful. … Under her leadership the board has accomplished some amazing things.”

“Michelle’s been an integral part of the board the entire time she has been on it and has provided amazing leadership as our president,” said board member Barbara Garvey, another educator who was elected in 2013 with Maggos. “She will be greatly missed and is leaving some huge shoes to fill.”
