Brookfield police say traffic will be diverted away from the intersection of Shields and Sunnyside avenues until at least 7:30 p.m. after a collision involving a car and a motorcycle.

Police Chief Michael Kuruvilla said preliminary information indicated that at about 5:30 p.m., a motorcycle driven by a man was traveling on Shields Avenue and that a car driven by a woman had entered the intersection from Sunnyside Avenue.

The woman is cooperating with the police investigation, said Kuruvilla, and detectives have been sent to the hospital to ascertain the severity of the motorcyclist’s injuries. Kuruvilla said that the motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet, is expected to survive.

Brookfield police will hold the scene until they can determine whether an accident reconstruction team from either Cook County or the Illinois State Police will respond to investigate.

This latest crash is the fifth since April in Brookfield involving a motorcycle.

More information will be published as it becomes available.
