Junior Jack Falls delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning April 11 to give the Lyons Township High School baseball team a dramatic 5-4 West Suburban Conference Silver victory over Downers Grove North in Western Springs.
The Lions (5-3, 3-1 in WSC Silver) tied the game 3-3 in the sixth only to have the Trojans regain a 4-3 advantage in the top of the seventh.
Sam Viniard was 2 for 2 and Cooper Ohlson, Patrick Engels and Charlie Greifenkamp also doubled. Winning pitcher Cormac Ryan and starter Luke Stockbridge (4 strikeouts in 6 innings) allowed just four hits combined.
LTHS won its first conference series by beating Glenbard West 16-5 and 12-4 last week.
The Lions saw Montini Catholic rally with a nine-run seventh inning April 11 and settled for a 10-10 tie.
Tess Meyer (4 RBIs) and Emily Joseph (3 RBIs) homered for the Lions (3-0-1) and Peyton O’Flaherty (3 for 4) and Ava Paganis doubled.
Paganis homered in the Lions’ 7-5 eight-inning win over host Leyden on April 5.
Joseph (.571, 8 RBIs) and O’Flaherty (.545) are among the LTHS offensive leaders.
LTHS boys water polo
The Lions (16-1) won their home invitational April 9 by beating Oak Park and River Forest 15-6 in the tourney’s final match.
LTHS also defeated second-place York 8-4, Palatine 17-8 and Lincoln-Way East 14-5 during the tournament.
Senior Jack Bradbury (team-high 74 goals) had four goals against York and three against OPRF along with Michael Wall and six versus LWE. A.J. Vitek and Jimmy Bolan had five-goal games against LWE and Palatine, respectively. Bolan (25), Sean Gripp (23) and Charlie Vlk (20) lead the team in assists.
LTHS girls track and field
In the cold and heavy winds, the Lions were second at the Downers Grove South Invitational on April 9.
Event champions were juniors Becky Phillips (400-meter run in 1:01.73) and Emma Kwak (100 in 12.70), who won by .06.
“I just tried to stay with the heat until the end. It was fun [to win],” Phillips said. “The wind was pretty tough, but the time was good so it’s good.”
Kwak (200 in 27.23), Leigh Ferrell (8-0 in pole vault), the 400 relay (51.61) and 3,200 relay (10:29.26) were second.
LTHS girls water polo
The Lions (16-1-1) continued their winning ways last week with West Suburban Silver victories over York 18-15, Hinsdale Central 15-1 and Whitney Young 13-5.
The Lions moved to 2-1 in West Suburban Silver duals with a 10-5 home victory over Oak Park and River Forest on April 5.
LTHS was 0-3 at the Willowbrook Quad on April 8 and fifth at the Thornton Fractional South Invite on April 9.
The LTHS girls (1-4) notched their first victory of the season 14-9 at Wheaton Warrenville South on April 6.
The same night at home, the LTHS boys (3-3) defeated the Tigers 14-4.
