With several younger players, especially sophomores, the Riverside-Brookfield High School boys tennis coach Sam Weiss sees an important strength.
“[We have] lots of kids who are eager to improve,” Weiss said. “[Our goals are to] work on the fundamentals, compete to the best of our ability.”
The Bulldogs also have a strong senior base. That includes key returnees Owen Leander (No. 1 singles), Nick Sacharski (No. 2 singles) and the No. 1 doubles team of senior Ethan Dimaano and sophomore Ian Dimaano. Leander and Sacharski played doubles at last year’s sectional.
RBHS beat Argo 5-2 in their April 6 season opener.
LTHS boys return state qualifiers
Two returning 2021 IHSA Class 2A state doubles qualifiers, sophomore Mason Mazzone and senior Will Carroll, lead 11 varsity returnees for the Lions.
Mazzone and graduated Owen O’Connor reached the final eight in doubles by winning four of six matches. Carroll and graduated Daniel Kiely were 1-2.
Mazzone also will see action at No. 1 singles this season.
Adding to doubles options with Carroll are junior Patrick Adams and sophomore Jack McLane, last year’s No. 3 doubles pair.
“Last year, eight out of 16 [on varsity] were underclassmen. Now everybody’s at least second year on varsity, so that makes a huge difference,” LT coach Dave Robare said. “This will still be a learning experience but they’ve seen varsity tennis.”
