Lyons Township High School sophomore Mason Mazzone nearly spent most of this tennis season playing singles.
Then he became doubles partners with senior Will Carroll.
“I kind of told [LTHS coach Dave Robare] I wanted to play doubles, because I knew I’d have a better shot at state,” Mazzone said.
The doubles pair qualified for the IHSA Class 2A state meet and finished among the top 24 with a 3-2 record, including an opening-round victory in the championship bracket. Mazzone and Carroll hoped for a top-five finish.
“I felt we definitely could have done better with how well we did during the regular season, but it is what it is,” Mazzone said.
The duo lost a third-set tiebreaker 14-12 in their second-round match after what Mazzone said was a controversial call during the super tiebreaker that might have changed the outcome. They then won two consolation matches, which were limited to eight-game pro sets because of rain delays.
The pair returned to state but with different 2021 doubles partners who have graduated.
“I learned a lot more from this year,” Mazzone said. “[Carroll’s] serve is very good. It made my job easy at the net. He was very flashy sometimes, just random, very good shots.”
Sophomore Jack McLane was 2-2 in singles with a first-round victory. Senior Tiernan Kelly and junior Patrick Adams were 1-2 in doubles with one consolation victory.
