Riverside-Brookfield High School sophomore Hailey Vlcek won two events and Lyons Township High School had two top-two freestyle relay finishes at the Rosary Invitational on Sept. 24.

Vlcek won 200-yard free (1 minute, 53.73 seconds) by 2.63 seconds and 500 free (5:11.96) by 3.41 seconds.

The Lions’ Maggie Adler, Audrey Cavaliere, Ella Jean Kelly and Becky Phillips won the 200 free relay (1:38.78) by 0.41 seconds over St. Ignatius and were second in the 400 free relay (3:35.79) by .77 to St. Ignatius.

Lindsay Forebaugh (100 butterfly in 59.32), Adler (200 free in 1:58.11), and Phillips (200 individual medley in 2:13.34) were third. Amelia Mariano was fourth in the 50 free (25.11).

The Bulldogs’ 400 free relay of Aja McKay, Ellis, Emma McVicker and Vlcek was sixth (3:47.33). Maria Ellis was ninth in the 200 free (2:03.04) and 10th in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.32). 


RBHS (6-15) won a close 25-19, 25-27, 25-23 match over Aurora Central Catholic on Sept. 22 and went 1-2 at the Rich Township Invite on Sept. 24, beating Thornton Fractional North 25-14, 25-15 and losing to Downers Grove South and Lincoln-Way West.

Sofia Owens, Annabel Krueger and Addie Blomgren were named to the all-tournament team at Rich Township.

Season stat leaders for the Bulldogs include Owens (72 kills), Krueger (135 assists, 23 aces), Kira Conroy (217 digs, 143 serve receptions), Elise Verdin (118 digs, 124 serve receptions) and Blomgren (45 blocks).

LTHS (17-3, 2-0 in West Suburban Silver) defeated Wheaton Warrenville South 25-14, 25-18 and Proviso West 25-4, 25-11 on Sept. 20.

Season stat leaders for the Lions include Kamryn Lee-Caracci (204 kills, 22 aces), Abby Markworth (413 assists), Kaitlyn Mahoney (172 digs, 290 serve receptions), Grace Brennan (108 kills), Maggie Kachmarik (123 digs, 19 aces) and Grace Turner (44 blocks).

RBHS cross country

RBHS junior Jack O’Brien was third (16:28.01 for 5,000 meters) and Brennan Lester 17th (17:16.94) at the Harvest Christian Academy Midseason Classic. RBHS, ranked No. 3 in 2A by ILXCTF.com, was sixth (139 points).

In the girls race, senior Bryce Pacourek was second (19:45.10) and Gianna Gelb sixth (20:11.27) for the fourth-place No. 25 Bulldogs (115). Nazareth’s Jane McNamara was fifth (20:05.98).

LTHS senior and 2021 all-stater Catherine Sommerfeld finished 12th (17:24.4 for 3.0 miles) in her season debut at the Palatine Invitational on Sept. 24.

Sommerfeld earned a top-30 individual medal, followed by the four-second pack of Shannon Cranny (35th, 18:23.3) and Julianne Melby (36th, 18:25.3) and Charlotte Lange (38th, 18:27.5), Scarlett Lestina (60th, 18:54.2), Anna Bylsma (63rd, 18:54.8) and Madison Findley (77th, 19:09.3).

Sommerfeld was 12th at state and seventh at the Palatine Invite in 2021 (17:17.9). 

“Obviously, I’m not going to be where I want to be at the end of the season, but I was happy to get out there, a good starting point,” Sommerfeld said. 

The Lions (180 points), ranked No. 9 in Class 3A by ILXCTF.com, finished fourth and third among Illinois teams behind No. 2 York and No. 1 Prospect.

The No. 12 LTHS boys finished second to Mason (Ohio) 35-71 at the Culver Academies Invitational in Indiana. 

Nick Strayer (15:55.5 for 5,000 meters), Cillian Henning (16:07.7) and Aidan Collins (16:12.0) were second, fifth and seventh.
