The Riverside-Brookfield High School girls gymnastics team and sophomore Lia Christiansen were big winners at Maine West’s Winter Wonderland Invitational Wednesday.

The Bulldogs (94.15 points) won the format in which teams entered three gymnasts per event with one being an all-arounder. Usually, teams are allowed five gymnasts per event with the top four scores counting.

Christiansen won all-around (33.95), vault (8.8) and balance beam (8.65) and was second on uneven parallel bars (8.1) and floor exercise (8.4).

Claudia Grusecki was third on vault (7.95) and Annabel Krueger (8.5) and Sarah Lindenberg (7.6) were third and fifth on beam. Vivien Grusecki (7.85 on floor) and Krueger (7.2 on uneven bars) were sixth.

The Bulldogs (8-9) finished the Sandburg Holiday Classic on Dec. 28 by beating Hammond (Indiana) Central 49-39 in the 15th-place game.

Niamh Larson (9 points), Julia Madera (8 points), Emily Organ, Alyssa Morris and Mayan Covarrubias (7 points each) and Bryce Pacourek (5 points) led the balanced attack. Morris had two fourth-quarter 3-pointers.

RBHS lost the previous day to Argo 40-36 in the third round. Larson (16 points, 10 in first half), Organ (10 points) and Covarrubias (7 points, three-pointer) led the Bulldogs in scoring.
