Sandra King

Sandra M. King (nee Smisek), 77, of Berkeley, died Feb. 13, 2023, at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital after an unexpected battle with lung cancer.

Ms. King was born to the late Charles and Mildred Smisek, on May 17, 1945, in Chicago and raised in the Berwyn-Cicero area. She graduated from Morton East High School in 1963.

“Sandie” as she was called by family and friends, was gifted in the arts. She played the flute in the marching band and enjoyed drawing, painting and making custom-made items for family members.

She worked for many years as an administrative assistant at the National Bank of Commerce in Berkeley. She was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed attending games or watching the team play on TV.

Ms. King was very involved in school activities including being a room mother and sharing her love and passion for the arts by being a “picture lady”. She was also involved with the Booster Club at Proviso West High School and was highly involved with raising her grandchildren. She loved animals including her beloved cat, Fergus.

She is survived by her husband Richard G. King of 57 years; two children, Katherine King and Heather King; two grandchildren, Emily King and Zachary King; her sister, Charlene (Jessie) Lampert; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sandie’s wishes were to not have a wake or funeral, and she will be cremated. She will join her late parents in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu flowers, please consider donating in her name to either the Magnificent Mutts Animal Rescue in Hillside (magnificentmutts.org) or the American Cancer Society (cancer.org/cancer/lung-cancer.html).
