
The Lyons Township High School girls soccer team responded appropriately to its first loss of the season on April 21.
Another victory. And another shutout.
The Lions (12-1) blanked Bartlett 4-0 on April 22 in the Naperville Invitational for their 11th shutout on the season with only three goals allowed.
Izzy Lebar scored twice and Caroline Mortonson and Caroline McKenna also tallied. Niamh Griffin, Mia Mathis, Katie O’Malley and Abby Brown had assists.
The Lions lost to Fremd on April 21 on penalty kicks to decide a 2-2 tie. Izzi Wirtz scored both goals with assists from O’Malley, who now has team highs of 17 assists and six goals. Wirtz, Griffin and Carolina Capizzi have five goals.
LTHS beat rival Hinsdale Central 1-0 on April 18 in West Suburban Conference Silver play on McKenna’s goal assisted by O’Malley.
LTHS baseball
The Lions (11-3, 6-2 in West Suburban Silver) extended their winning streak to four by beating Proviso West 15-0 in four innings April 24 after beating Marian Catholic 4-3 on April 21 and Hinsdale Central 4-1 on April 18.
The victory over Marian Catholic was part of the Do It Stevie’s Way Tournament. The Lions’ next pool game is at Homewood-Flossmoor on May 5.
Troy Stukenberg (2 RBIs) smacked a two-run homer in a four-run fifth. Winning pitcher Tristan Clark (3 innings) and starter Brady Chambers combined on a three-hitter with three strikeouts apiece.
Stukenberg and Patrick Engels had the lone hits against Hinsdale Central. Ryan Jackson and Engels had RBIs and James Georgelos scored twice. Tucker King pitched a complete-game seven-hitter with five strikeouts.
Luke Nicholaus homered against Proviso West, Michael Mango tripled and Engels and Falls doubled. Winning pitcher Xzavier Vargas (3 innings) and Luke Allegretti each allowed one hit.
LTHS boys tennis
Juniors Mason Mazzone and Jack McLane are 5-1 at No. 1 doubles for the Lions (6-0), who have tied for first at the Naperville North Invitational and were second at the Libertyville Invitational earlier this month.
Mazzone and McLane are the Lions’ two returning 2022 IHSA Class 2A state qualifiers. Mazzone was a top-24 state doubles finisher with graduated Will Carroll with a 3-2 record. McLane was 2-2 in singles. Mazzone also was a 2021 state doubles qualifier.
Other top performers this season include senior Patrick Adams and junior Luke Howell (6-3 at No. 2 doubles), freshman Shay Sweigard (7-4 at No. 1/2 singles) and senior Will Cotts and junior George Ross (5-2 at No. 2/3 doubles).
LTHS boys volleyball
The Lions (17-3) lost their first match at the Downers Grove South Invitational on April 21 to Maine South to snap a five-match winning streak, but then beat Joliet Central and Downers Grove North, Benet and New Trier on April 22 to win the second-place bracket.
LTHS moved to 2-1 in West Suburban Silver play by beating York 25-23, 25-20 April 18.
LTHS softball
The Lions (2-8) once again used double digits for victory in beating rival Hinsdale Central 17-14 on April 21. LTHS won its first game 15-10 over Stagg on April 14.
LTHS lacrosse
The LTHS boys improved to 8-0 by beating St. Charles North 6-3 on April 22 and Lemont 14-3 on April 21.
The LTHS girls defeated Riverside-Brookfield 17-2 on April 24.
