Explore South America virtually

Brookfield Public Library invites you to join world traveler Brian Michalski as he guides you through his more than year-long trek in South America during the virtual program "Searching for South America" on Thursday, May 14 at 7 p.m. 

Michalski will guide you down the Inca Trail, navigate pristine Patagonia and explore the Amazon rain forest, while explaining how he also volunteered, took Spanish classes, earned his English teaching certificate and worked remotely. 

He'll enthrall you with as many entertaining stories as he has passport stamps.

Make every day special

The Parks and Recreation Departments in Brookfield and North Riverside invite you to make the most of every day by participating in special events, challenges and activities, which will be detailed on their Facebook pages (facebook.com/NRRecreation and facebook.com/BrookfieldEvents), where you can also post photos and comments.

In Brookfield it's Biking in Brookfield Day on May 13, National Chicken Dance Day on May 14, Peace Officer Memorial Day on May 15, National Visit your Relatives Day – via Zoom on May 18, Top Chef Tuesday on May 19 and Brookfield Ninja Warriors on May 20.

In North Riverside, it's National Chicken Dance Day on May 14. The department's eSports league goes live on May 19 using the Mission Control platform. Watch for more details on Facebook.

 

Get the Census 2020 lowdown

North Riverside Public Library and Age Options invite senior citizens to learn just how important it is for them to be counted during "Census 2020: Why Do I Count?" a virtual program that will be held via conference call on Thursday, May 14 at 10:30 a.m.

Get all the Census info you need to help yourself, your family and your friends get counted. The session will include a question-and-answer period.

Participate by calling 800-747-5150 and entering the code 1453322.

 

Aging Care Connections online classes

Aging Care Connections of LaGrange continues its online programs and classes over the next week with opportunities to be entertained, stay active and learn.

The following programs are on tap: "Medications: A Double-Edged Sword" on May 14 at 10 a.m.; Senior Strong Fitness on May 15 at 11:15 a.m.; Flicks on a Friday featuring "Gosford Park: via Zoom on May 15 at 3 p.m.; "Thriving at Home" on May 18 at 11:30 a.m.; and a Balance and Strength Fitness Class on May 19 at 1 p.m.

 North Riverside Public Library is offering the following virtual programs through Facebook Live, conference calls and the teleconferencing app Zoom. Programs include Talented Tuesdays every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. via Facebook Live on North Riverside Public Library's Facebook page; Whatcha Readin' and Watchin' Wednesday every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom; Game Night Fridays every Friday at 7 p.m. via Zoom; Cooking Demo: Instant Pot on Facebook Premier and Instagram TV on May 16 at 10:30 a.m.; and Stretching and Meditation via conference phone (call 800-747-5150, code 1453322) on May 18 at 6:30 p.m. RSVP to bodenl@northriversidelibrary.org for all Zoom meeting access info.

  Brookfield Public Library offers virtual classes and programs for patrons of all ages throughout the week. Most youth activities will be presented live on the library's Facebook page. Events include literacy classes and Geek Labs, Zumba for Families and Mammals & More. Youth Services will also host a weekly sidewalk art challenge on Sundays. Each week's winner will receive a gift card to a local business.

Adults can participate in programs by signing up for events hosted on Zoom, including Chair Yoga on May 14 at 11 a.m.; Girls Night Out Book Club via Zoom on May 18 at 7 p.m.; and Movies with Alan on May 20 at 5 p.m. Register to get access info at the Brookfield Public Library website.

  Riverside Arts Center offers Boredom Buster Boxes to give the kids some hands-on fun. Each box contains 6 pounds of clay, a scoring tool, a sponge, six underglaze colors, a slip, a paintbrush and project and instruction sheets. Order online and RAC will deliver the boxes to your front porch (no contact). RAC delivers to Riverside, North Riverside, Lyons, Brookfield, Berwyn, LaGrange, Oak Park, Austin and Belmont Cragin.   If you hold a Riverside Public Library card, you can delve into your family tree using Ancestry.com for free during the month of May. Get started at riversidelibrary.org/genealogy. The library also offers virtual programs for adults, kids and families, including Genealogy Club on Zoom on May 14 at 7 p.m.; Kids and Family Guided Meditation on May 15 at 10 a.m. and Knitting Club on Zoom on May 18 at 7 p.m. Visit the Riverside Public Library website to register and get access info. 

 Lucky Plush Productions, the contemporary dance ensemble founded and directed by Riverside resident Julia Rhoads, invites you to celebrate its 20th anniversary during a virtual party planned for May 22 at 7 p.m. Tickets begin at $25 and can be purchased at the Lucky Plush Productions website. A link to the party will be sent by email prior to the event.
