Just hours after all Carson Pirie Scott locations shut their doors Aug. 29 in the wake of a company-wide liquidation – the Carson's website had a somewhat surprising announcement to share.

"We've got great news. Carson's is coming back! Stay tuned for updates over the coming weeks."

The same message could be found at the website of the late department store's parent company, The Bon Ton Stores, as well as the websites of its other store nameplates, Boston Store, Bergner's, Herberger's, Elder-Beerman and Younkers.

One the Carson's store locator map, all of the shuttered locations, including the one in North Riverside, are listed as "temporarily closed."

Before filing for bankruptcy protection in February, The Bon Ton Stores operated 260 stores.

A pair of liquidation firms, Great American Group LLC and Tiger Capital Group LLC, purchased The Bon Ton Stores' assets at auction for $575 million in April.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reached the president of the company leading the liquidation sales about the mysterious website announcements, but got an equally cryptic response.

"The company's intellectual property is in the process of being sold," said Great American Group's Scott Carpenter in an emailed statement to the Journal-Sentinel "We cannot speak to the purchaser's future plans with the company. All inquiries should be referred to the buyer which will be disclosed once the transaction is closed."

The Bon Ton Stores was headquartered in Milwaukee and York, Pennsylvania.
