Riverside officials have announced that the Des Plaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District will be spraying for adult mosquitos in Riverside and surrounding areas on Tuesday, Aug. 9 between 8 p.m. and midnight, weather permitting.
The Des Plaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District, which serves suburban Cook County west of Harlem Avenue between North Avenue and about 87th Street, announced in late July that instances of mosquitos testing positive for West Nile Virus have increased due to recent warm temperatures.
The district reported on its website that it had planned spraying on Monday, Aug. 8 in Lyons, Brookfield south of the railroad tracks and west of Salt Creek and other southwest suburbs.
Meanwhile, the Illinois Department of Public Health reports that there have been four human cases of West Nile Virus in the state in 2016. None of those cases was fatal. There are 30 counties in Illinois so far this year where humans, mosquitoes, horses and birds have tested positive for the virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes and affects the human central nervous system and can result in serious illness or, in 3 to 15 percent of severe cases, death.
“It is very important to protect yourself with mosquito repellent when outdoors, especially at duck and dawn,” the Des Plaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District’s website warns.
