Marty FarmerSports Editor

Marty Farmer, a longtime sports freelancer for the Riverside-Brookfield Landmark, has been named sports editor. He will oversee sports coverage in print, online and in social media for the Landmark and its sister paper Wednesday Journal of Oak Park and River Forest.

Farmer, a Berwyn resident, has covered prep sports for more than a decade and has long connections to local schools and coaches. In addition to writing for the Journal and Landmark for 10 years, Farmer has also worked on the Chicago Sun-Times prep desk for several years. He is a freelance writer for the Chicago Bulls publications and website, as well.

“Community journalism is about connections,” said Dan Haley, editor and publisher, in announcing Farmer’s hire. “Marty comes with strong relationships and considerable respect among the schools we cover. He knows coaches and athletic directors, parents and student athletes. He loves prep sports and he is ready and eager to help us grow our coverage in interesting ways. We’re excited. He’s excited.”

For his part, Farmer said the chance to oversee an entire sports section and to lead the effort to move faster in digital coverage while keeping the weekly print section a must-read was a job he wanted to take on.

“It’s truly an honor to be chosen as the new sports editor of the Wednesday Journal and Riverside-Brookfield Landmark,” Farmer said. “I am excited about this opportunity to preserve the great sports writing tradition of our publications, while also enhancing our digital and print coverage with fresh material and cutting-edge ideas to provide our readers compelling stories.”

Farmer succeeds Brad Spencer who had edited sports at the Journal and Landmark for the past 10 years.
