Brookfield police issued warnings to seven retail businesses this month for selling tobacco to minors. Brookfield police inspected a total of 19 tobacco retailers in the village?"12 on Oct.10 and seven on Oct. 14, as part of the Illinois Liquor Control Commission's "Kids Can't Buy 'Em Here" tobacco enforcement program.

The Brookfield Police Department sent a letter to each tobacco retailer in the village on Oct. 3, along with a "Tobacco Retail Kit," reminding employees about laws concerning the sale of tobacco products. The letter also stated that "sometime in the near future you establishment will be inspected to verify compliance to state/local minimum-age tobacco laws."

Of those inspected, the following retailers were issued warnings: Johnny B's, 8836 Brookfield Ave.; Brixie's Saloon, 9526 Ogden Ave.; Village Pantry, 3100 Maple Ave.; Armenetti's Liquors, 9034 31st St.; Osco Drug Store, 9139 Broadway Ave.; CVS Pharmacy, 8911 Ogden Ave. and Brook Food and Liquor, 9016 47th St.

Tobacco retailers were inspected in the first of three rounds of compliance checks on all tobacco retailers in the community. Retailers found in violation during this first round of checks were all issues written warnings. Arrests, rather than warnings, will be issued to repeat violators in future checks.

The tobacco compliance checks are being funded with the help of a $2,240 grant from the Illinois Liquor Control Commission.
