After mulling over the option of hiring an athletic director for George Washington Middle School, the Lyons District 103 School Board has instead approved the position of Athletic Team Leader.

"We did not want to reopen the contract to negotiate a stipend for a new position," Superintendent Dr. Raymond Lauk said. "The teachers' union has penalties regarding administrative raises over 6 percent during a contract.

"So if we reopened the contract, then it is treated as a new contract subject, too. So by classifying the position as just one of the many team leader positions that we already have, there is no union issue or contract issue. It is just done, and the person will be paid the normal team leader stipend of $2,200 a year."

Lauk stated this position would handle the normal roles of an athletic director from scheduling to other athletic administrative duties.
