Riverside police say a 13-year-old boy has been charged with aggravated assault and felony unlawful use of a weapon on school property and a 16-year-old boy has been charged with misdemeanor battery after a fight involving a knife in a hallway at Riverside-Brookfield High School on Nov. 19.

No one was stabbed or otherwise hurt in the incident, which happened after sixth period at about 2:55 p.m. inside the school at 160 Ridgewood Road in Riverside. By the time police arrived on the scene, school security had intervened, taking the weapon and detaining both students in the school office, where police took them into custody.

According to a press release issued by Riverside police on Nov. 22, the two students, both North Riverside residents, were involved in an ongoing dispute. The 16-year-old boy reportedly punched the other boy in the face, police said, after which the 13 year old fought back and pulled out a folding knife with a three-inch blade.

The 13-year-old boy allegedly tried to stab the older boy in the abdomen, but missed, before the fight was broken up.

Both boys were petitioned to Cook County Juvenile Justice authorities and released into the custody of their parents.
