Devereaux Peters shook off the effects of an illness that sidelined her for the entire first quarter of Fenwick’s game against Benet on Saturday and led the Friars to a 61-37 win over their East Suburban Catholic opponent.
Peters, who, while battling a cold, took to the court 12 minutes into the contest with her team up a point, only played 14 minutes of Saturday’s game. But what the senior forward did in those 14 minutes led the Friars to their 11th straight victory. Peters scored 17 points, hauled down 13 rebounds, pocketed six steals and garnered four blocks. She scored six points to lead the No. 1-ranked Friars (11-0, 3-0) on an 8-0 burst before halftime.
“She was amazing,” said Fenwick head coach Dave Power, “just in another zone.”
Alison Jackson finished with 14 points, while Erin Power went 3-for-3 from three-point range and finished with 11 points and 11 assists. Freshman Tricia Liston also chipped in 11 points for the Friars.
The win followed Fenwick’s 47-12 lambasting of Joliet Catholic on Thursday. The Friars held the Hilltoppers to a mere two points in the first half, going into the break up 36-2.
Every Fenwick player scored in the game, including Jackson who had the team-high 11 points.
Fenwick has a few days off before vying for its third straight (seventh overall) Dundee-Crown Holiday tournament championship beginning Dec. 26. The Friars take on Regina in the opening round at 4 p.m. If all goes well for Fenwick, the Friars could possibly face Buffalo Grove or New Trier in the championship game on Dec. 29th at 8 p.m. Buffalo Grove (10-0) is currently ranked No. 2 in the Chicago daily newspapers. The team is led by twins Maggie and Alison Mocchi.
“Our defense has been staying solid, and the bench is getting a lot of minutes and producing,” said Power. “I’m pleased with where we’re at, but of course there’s always room for improvement. I’d still like to see the offense running a little bit better.”
