On the first day of the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic at York High School, Riverside-Brookfield's boys basketball team prevailed in its first-round matchup against Stagg in a 65-48 lopsided win.
Trailing 10-9 after the opening quarter, the Bulldogs outscored the Chargers 41-26 over the next 16 minutes to take a commanding 50-35 lead.
Paul Zilinskas led RBHS with 28 points, going 5-for-8 from 3-point range. Other contributors to the victory were John Hanley (10 points), Jack Stivers (8 points, 5 rebounds), and Nate Schoditsch (7 assists).
The Bulldogs advance to the second round where they will meet Wheaton North High School, which defeated Palatine 57-36 in its first round matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for Dec. 27 at 4:30 p.m.
Lyons Township High School, who is also participating in the tournament, used a 35-16 outburst over the middle two quarters to notch a 64-45 victory over Sandburg.
Grant Niego led the Lions with 19 points and 10 rebounds. John Wall added 9 points and 11 rebounds, and Ben Engels and Josh Heath each contributed 8 points.
LTHS will face St. Laurence in a second-round game Dec. 27 at 5 p.m. The Vikings edged past St. Francis 77-73 in overtime.
