Riverside police chief expresses frustration with ruling

UPDATE: Feb. 6, 2013 at 2:55 p.m.

The Illinois Department of Corrections wesbite indicates that Lawrence Adamczyk's parole has been revoked and that he is back in custody at the Stateville Correctional Center. The website also indicates that his next parole date has yet to be determined.

Lawrence Adamczyk, a 49-year-old Rockford man who reportedly told police he entered Riverside-Brookfield High School in January looking to have sex with a boy was found not guilty of disorderly conduct and criminal trespass on Friday.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Ramon Ocasio handed down his ruling at a hearing Feb. 1 at the Maybrook courthouse, following a trial on Jan. 22.

"I am extremely disappointed with Judge Ocasio's ruling," said Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel. "We had a solid case and direct testimony was given by both security personnel and police officers as to the circumstances surrounding Mr. Adamczyk's arrest."

Adamczyk, who was found by an RBHS security staff member walking the halls of the high school on the morning of Jan. 12, will not simply be set free.

On Friday, the Cook County Jail website indicated that Adamczyk was still being held on a no-bond warrant issued by the Illinois Department of Corrections when he was arrested in Riverside.

However, on Monday, Adamczyk was no longer listed as an inmate at Cook County Jail. He was also still listed as being on parole by IDOC, suggesting Adamczyk had been released back to the Chicago halfway house where he was serving his parole.

Adamczyk was paroled from prison on Dec. 28, 2012 after serving part of a three-year sentence for a 2011 aggravated battery conviction. In that case, Adamczyk was convicted of inappropriately touching three men while they were exercising at a St. Charles health club and exposing himself to others at the health club.

Adamczyk had been serving his parole at a South Side halfway house. He is allowed to leave the halfway house during the day. When he was arrested by Riverside police inside the pool area of RBHS on Jan. 12, Adamczyk reportedly told police that he got off the train in Riverside and walked toward Brookfield Zoo.

However, as he reached the high school, he reportedly told police he began hearing voices in his head, including the voice of pop singer Justin Bieber, who told him to go inside the school. Adamczyk was wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet on his ankle when he was arrested.

If Adamczyk is not returned to state prison, he will return to the halfway house to finish his sentence.

According to police, Adamczyk has a history of arrests where he allegedly groped juveniles, both male and female.

In 2003, Adamczyk was arrested three times for incidents involving juveniles. That February, he was charged with battery of a juvenile by West Chicago police and served a 60-day sentence. In August 2003, Bloomingdale police charged Adamczyk with battery and he was sentenced to 60 days in jail for grabbing a juvenile's buttocks in the food court of a shopping mall. The following month, he was accused by Cherry Valley police of inappropriately touching a female juvenile. That case was dismissed.

Northern Illinois University police in 2005 charged Adamczyk with public indecency and disorderly conduct for masturbating inside a health club on the campus. He was sentenced to 18 months' probation and fined $1,130. Also that year, Adamczyk was reportedly found inside the boys locker room at LaSalle-Peru High School. He was not charged, since there was no evidence of any criminal action.

"He is without a doubt a danger to society and has no business walking the streets, as his intent has been apparent over the past 10 years," said Weitzel, "targeting juveniles to engage in sex acts with."

So if he had been able to carry out his "mission" that day- would it been okay to throw his butt in jail then? Sounds like he made his intentions quite clear- fortunately a staff member at RB was savvy enough to stop him first. Judge Ocasio did NOT make the right decision. And how did he go to trial so quickly?

From Nixle.com story- Mr. Adamczyk stated that he intended on looking for a boy who would have perform a sex act with him. He went on went to say that he had, in fact, had been masturbating while watching the boys swimming event before police arrived. Mr. Adamczyk made several other intensely sexual statements involving young boys to Riverside Police investigators that are simply too graphic to include in a public statement. No contact was made with any student and the suspect was not armed

With a judicial system like this brings people to do criminal things to people like this...let me see him at the zoo when I'm there with my kids....hopefully I get the same judge is all I can say

I love my children and hate child molesters, but that doesn't change the fact that in this instance this would-be child molester didn't do anything wrong. This is our judicial system - enshrined in our constitution. While I know child molesters drive all of us crazy and many people say things like - CUT HIS PENIS OFF and KILL HIM - we have to respect our judicial system. Judge Ocasio came to the right decision here - he walked into a pool area, not molested little kids.

Mom from Winfield. You say more will come out, then SAY SOMETHING. Call his parole officer or the States Attorney. They did not have enough to arrest him because he did nothing wrong he just verbalized it. For God sake if you have more info let someone know don't let this turn into a Penn State situation where noone comes forward.

He has been doing this & getting away with it, for at least 20 years! He coached little boys hot shot basketball at West Chicago Park District in the early 90's. There were many complaints from parents that were ignored. He then coached at the West Chicago High School with the same boys and was caught masturbating in front of them. There is a lot more out there about him that has not been told--this is a situation that will harm our children because the proper action has not been taken!

What the hell is wrong with our system? does this guy have to be caught violating a young boy before he is put in prison..... and how does his attorney lay his head on his pillow at night??? He must not have any sons

PF:I had my head checked.Doc says I'm crazy for living around here.

John, get your head checked! Think about moving south, deep south is where republicans like you should be!!!!!!! Not in this community1

Are you kidding me??? He admitted to what he was there to do and he was found NOT GUILTY.... I guess the Judge/ Attorneys do not have children in that school. People try to do the right thing by calling the police and the courts let them go free... They say because they have not hurt anyone.... Really..... is it not to Late then?? I will NOT be voting for that Judge. Maybe we should enroll their kids/ grandchildren in the school and see how they feel then.

As sick as this guy is, what did he do wrong. He came in an open school but did not attack anyone. The problem here is getting him help so he doesn't attack anyone in the future. Unfortunately getting him help will be difficult and someone will probably be harmed.

According to the court, the judge is listed as Ramon Ocasio and is a circuit court judge. As a circuit court judge, not an associate, he will be up for re-appointment by the electorate. Please vote this judge out of office! To the Landmark, when you list your voter recommendations for the next election, please recommend a NO for this judge and re-print/remind our community of this occurrence.

I am the grandmother of an RB student. What is the judge waiting for? What is the criminal justice system waiting for? This obviously disturbed individual to commit a felony sexual crime involving a child or worse before something is done!!!! A lot of good the monitoring anklet does if he is allowed to travel freely while wearing it. He belongs in a treatment facility, if not a prison, not in a halfway house!!

This one was absolutely not on the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. There was nothing more that could have been presented by the State's Attorney's office. The judge determined that there was no illegal action by Adamczyk, solely his thoughts and desires, which although disgusting, are not a criminal act. The State's Attorney's office should be commended for the way they handled this case, not opting to "plea it out" but going straight for the throat. Just a bad judicial decision.

NRB you know the score. This was a big pile of manure we have endured from these court rulings. Patrick you are part of the problem. This guy is going to continue. He may like it in jail. Does not have to go out looking. He should be locked up. Not on the street. WAKE UP PEOPLE NOW. GO TO COURT AND SHOW SOLIDARITY DO IT. PEOPLE NEED TO STAND UP THIS IS BAD.

Before you idiots start beating on the police, keep in mind that a trial involves a Cook County State's Attorney and a Cook County judge. The police present evidence to the State's Attorney and that's who decides what charges will be brought and when the trial will proceed based upon the evidence. I would point the finger at an incompetent State's Attorney and a lousy judge. I am shocked that a trial was held this quickly in this county. Something feels very wrong here.

This man prior record, with the testimony the police had should have locked him up. This Man next vile act is on this Judge head. Hope he is voted out of his office.

Concerned citizen:if you think I punch "all Democrat" you're sadly mistaken.Ive never voted for any Democrat in my life,I'm not about to start now.I work for a living, unlike the bottom feeders who vote for a living.I get which 1 you are.

Why blame the police? Seems like some of you people have a personal problem. Paul, you've been popped for years if you are the same Paul I'm thinking of. John, you need to register to vote and vote these judges out of office. People seem to vote by party lines and hit the ALL DEMOCRAT button. Go through the list, do some research. I have nothing but respect for RPD and the job they do. People need to take the blame for this, RPD didn't vote these judges into office, you did.

His lawyer obviously has connections, how else do you go to trial 10 days after your arrest? I'm surprised the initial paperwork had even finished being processed.

Before anyone starts to make comments that the police department blew the case. Maybe you honest citizens should actually do some research on the judges you vote for. The department had a strong case, and obviously other departments did too, welcome to cook county. Don't like it, MOVE!
