Jerome J. Wachter, 86, a resident of Riverside for 54 years, died Feb. 7, 2014.

Mr. Wachter was born Sept. 16, 1927 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

After the war he steered his career toward education, serving as a teacher and later principal of Mancel Talcott School on Chicago's West Side. Mr. Wachter was also a member of the Riverside Auxiliary Police, attaining the rank of lieutenant in that organization.

In addition, Mr. Wachter was a naturalist at the Little Red Schoolhouse in Willow Springs and River Trail Nature Center in Northbrook. He also served as chaplain and Eucharistic minister at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn and St. Mary Church in Riverside.

Mr. Wachter was the husband of Muriel Wachter (nee Piedfort); the father of Mary (Mark) Walker, Margaret Wachter and John (Laura) Walker; the grandfather of Sarah, Molly, Erin and Rachel Walker; and the son of the late Mary Anne Fuller Wachter, Anna Marie Wachter and Herbert Wachter.

Visitation will be on Thursday, Feb. 13 from 2 to 8 p.m. and on Friday, Feb. 14 from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. at Ivins/Moravecek Funeral Home, 80 E. Burlington St., Riverside. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 126 Herrick Road in Riverside. Entombment is private.
