John C. Mateja, 94, retired Sun-Times driver

John C. Mateja, 94, of North Riverside and formerly of Berwyn and Chicago, died Feb. 15, 2013.

Mr. Mateja was born Nov. 16, 1918. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a longtime truck driver for the Chicago Sun-Times, starting with the company when it was still the Chicago Sun.

He was the husband of the late Daisy Mateja (nee Crbut); the father of Phyllis Meisner, John (Josephine) Mateja, Daniel (Sandy) Mateja, Gail Mateja, Linda Fonte, Kenneth (Sue) Mateja, William (Maria) Mateja, Laurie Mateja and the late James Mateja; the grandfather of 20, the great-grandfather of 28; the great-great grandfather of two; and the uncle of many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 18 at St. Louise de Marillac Church in LaGrange Park, followed by interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.

Hitzeman Funeral Home, Brookfield, handled arrangements.

John was a very nice man. And how do I know that? He put up with me with a smile on his face. You did well, John...atta boy! I will miss him. May he rest in peace.
