A 27-year-old Villa Park man who was stabbed in the abdomen outside a Brookfield bar, early Sunday morning, is expected to survive, according to police.

Brookfield Police Lt. Edward Petrak said a 30-year-old LaGrange Park man is in custody and charges against him pending the results of an interview with a representative from the Cook County State's Attorney. The suspect reportedly is claiming he acted in self-defense.

According to the police report, the incident occurred in the parking lot outside Brixie's Saloon, 9526 Ogden Ave., about 4 a.m. on Feb. 2. The suspect reportedly was sitting in his vehicle when someone bumped his car while entering a vehicle parked next to it.

An argument ensued, during which the suspect allegedly pulled out a trench knife and stabbed the victim in the abdomen. The suspect reportedly left the scene but was detained a block away in the parking lot of a gas station at Ogden and Eberly avenues.

Police reportedly recovered a black knife with brass knuckles around the handle from the front passenger seat of the suspect's vehicle.

"They say he's going to live, but they want to keep him in the hospital for a week," said Petrak of the victim. "The knife nicked his liver. He was lucky to survive."
