Why are you running for a seat on District 103 school board?
I am running to ensure that the children of our communities are provided the best education possible. The volunteer experience acquired over the years has shown my dedication and hard work on behalf of the children in our community.
Are you or a family member employed by the village of Lyons?
No, neither I nor any family member have ever been employed by the Village of Lyons.
What role should municipal politics and politicians play at the school board level?
The two should be separate entities. However, I believe that they need to work together to ensure the safety of the students.
What do you think about standardized test scores and academic performance at schools in District 103?
I’m concerned that student achievement is measured by standardized test scores. While scores are important, I’m worried that the practical application of the knowledge isn’t grasped by the students. What action can the school board take to help improve student achievement? Actions that can be taken are to review the scores and performance, compare with the state rankings and work with the educators to improve the process.
How does District 103 integrate technology into the classroom?
The schools have computer labs, chromebooks and some classrooms have smartboards. They also utilize websites that are structured to coincide with the lesson plans in textbooks.
What can be done to expand the integration of technology at the classroom level?
Work with the educators to determine what technology is needed and research which grants could be applied for to assist in the expansion of technology at the classroom level.
At the time of this election, the current school board will have selected a new superintendent after a months-long search process. Should that new top administrator be allowed to freely assemble an administrative team, or should the board intervene and request more input?
The Board and the new Superintendent should work together to develop the administrative team to ensure that the education and safety of the students remains the primary objective.
Would you consider replacing the new superintendent, if that option were available, prior to the start of the 2019-20 school year?
No, I was able to take part in the interview process and stand behind the current boards’ decision.
What other issues are important to you as a school board candidate?
The school lunch program and students’ safety. How would you advocate for them as a board member? I will advocate by reviewing the vendor contract to see if the program can be improved and by attending training offered by the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) and getting familiar with state legislature.
