Will County board member Mike Fricilone is on his way to a convincing victory in the Republican primary in Illinois' 3rd Congressional District.
With 452 of 500 precincts reporting Fricilone had 58.8 percent of the vote to 31.1 percent for Oak Lawn realtor Catherine O'Shea and 10.1 percent for perennial candidate Art Jones.
Jones, who was once a member of the American Nazi Party, was the Republican nominee in 2018 when he was the only Republican to file to run in the primary. In the general election, Jones won nearly 26 percent of the vote while losing to Dan Lipinski.
This year, the Illinois Republican Party made a concerted effort to make sure that would not happen again.
They recruited Fricilone to run and then backed him with a $50,000 effort to educate voters about Jones's neo-Nazi views. They created a website to highlight Jones' past and paid for digital ads and anti-Jones robo calls.
