The Riverside Brookfield boys basketball team’s season came to an end last week with a 65-44 loss to Proviso East in the second round of the Farragut Regional held at Collins High School. The Bulldogs stayed right with the highly-ranked Pirates for the first quarter, taking a 15-14 lead. But Proviso East took advantage of some key miscues to snag away the lead for good, and go into the break up eight, 33-25.

The Pirates dominated the second half, and held junior Chris Parrish to nine points.

Jon Baldermann closed out his high school career at RB with back-to-back double-double performances. The senior scored 24 points and hauled down 11 rebounds in RB’s 52-51 victory over Orr in the first round. The following night against Proviso East Baldermann finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Dan Oswald chipped in eight points for the Bulldogs, who complete the season with a 10-17 overall record and a 7-1 Metro Suburban Conference mark.

Friars dealt blow from St. Joe again

The Fenwick boys basketball team would probably like nothing more than to face someone other than St. Joseph in the early rounds of the playoffs.

The Friars fell 62-48 to the Chargers on Friday night in the Nazareth Regional title game. It was the fifth time in the last six years Fenwick has fallen to St. Joseph in the playoffs, the last three coming in the sectionals.

The Chargers (23-4) jumped on an 11-2 lead in the first before Fenwick cut it to 13-7. The Friars came to within four in the final period with the help of Derek Tartt, who scored all seven of his points in the stanza. But turnovers plagued Fenwick as Evan Turner rattled off seven points of his own to lead the Chargers on a 13-3 run.

Sophomore Xavier Humphrey led Fenwick with 15 points, while Newman Delany added seven points.

LT falls to Hubbard

The Lyons boys basketball team found out Feb. 28 that you can’t afford to dig too deep of a hole if you expect to stay alive in postseason play.

Despite rallying late in the second half of its Class AA regional opener against Hubbard at Curie High School, Lyons couldn’t overcome the hole it dug during its 59-57 season-ending loss.

Lyons (16-10) finally came to life midway through the third quarter behind the solid play of Grant Porter, Dan Olund and Eddie Villiunas. The trio sparked a comeback that helped the Lions tie the game at 45-45 midway through the fourth quarter.

Porter finished the contest with a team-high 15 points, while Olund added 12. Villiunas finished with 11. Porter concluded the season as the team’s leading scorer at 11 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

“We were very competitive most nights this season,” Stamas said. “Most of our losses were either two or three-point defeats.”
