The following information was obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside and Brookfield police departments from May 16 through May 22 and represents a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
Berwyn resident Daniel A. Malinowski was charged with retail theft and battery after he allegedly ran out of the Minuteman gas station/convenience store, 3346 Harlem Ave., Riverside, with a case of beer without paying. The alleged event took place just before 1:30 a.m. on May 16.
According to police, Malinowski ran across Harlem Avenue and down 34th Street in Berwyn, chased by the convenience store clerk. However, Malinowski allegedly punched the clerk in the face, and continued running all the way to his home in the 3000 block of Clarence Avenue.
However, a witness had recognized Malinowski and gave that information to police, who tracked him down at his home.
Malinowski met police at the door, reportedly saying, “I did it. I was drunk.” He was taken into custody without incident.Burglary
? Sometime in the overnight hours of May 18-19, a resident of the 9500 block of Garfield Avenue, Brookfield, reported that someone had smashed in the driver’s side window of his 1998 Ford Windstar and removed the stereo/CD player from the dash and a set of Titleist golf clubs and golf bag from the rear seat. The total loss was valued at $1,300, not counting the damage to the dashboard.
? Sometime in the overnight hours of May 18-19, a resident of the 9500 block of Lexington Avenue, Brookfield, reported that someone had broken out the driver’s side vent window of his 1998 Jeep Wagoneer and removed the stereo/CD player ($250 value) from the dash, damaging the dash in the process.
? Police reported that sometime on May 20, an unknown person removed a Canon Optura 20 video camera from an unlocked 1992 Chevy van parked in the 4000 block of Forest Avenue, Brookfield.Hit and run
? Riverside police charged Oak Lawn resident Javier Vital, 22, with leaving the scene of an accident after he allegedly rear-ended a vehicle in the 3000 block of Harlem Avenue and fled just after 5 p.m. on May 21. Vital allegedly abandoned the heavily damaged car in the 100 block of Herrick Road and called his girlfriend, who owned the vehicle, to pick him up. When police reached the vehicle’s owner, the woman reportedly told police Vital had been driving the vehicle. He turned himself into police on May 22, and was charged with driving on a suspended license, leaving the scene and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Littering? Three teenagers were cited for littering after reportedly admitting to throwing several stuffed animals out of a car window and onto the street just after 7 p.m. on May 21 in Brookfield.
According to the report, two Brookfield officers on bike patrol noticed several stuffed animals being tossed from a gray vehicle traveling north on Morton Avenue from Southview Avenue. The officers reported another animal coming from the car near Washington and Raymond Avenues and another at Jefferson and Cleveland avenues.
When the vehicle was stopped at Cleveland and Monroe avenues, police reported a large number of stuffed animals and five passengers in the vehicle. The passengers said they found the toys in the trash in LaGrange Park. Three of them, Nicholas J. Panasky, 17, of LaGrange Park; Scott M. Smith, 17, of LaGrange Park; and a 16-year-old North Riverside girl allegedly admitted throwing the toys out the window.DUI
? Brookfield police charged Brian K. Perina, 46, of Johnsburg, Ill., with driving under the influence after police reported him driving erratically just after 2 a.m. on May 20.
According to police, an officer observed Perina slowly roll his vehicle into traffic in the 8900 block of Burlington Boulevard, nearly striking another vehicle. Perina continued over the railroad tracks and then east onto Brookfield Avenue, where he allegedly nearly struck the concrete barrier for the Salt Creek bridge and weaved from lane to lane. After being pulled over, Perina reportedly failed field sobriety tests and blew a .212 on the Breathalyzer, over twice the legal limit. He was also cited for numerous traffic violations.Disorderly conduct
? Brookfield resident Robert P. Mough, 21, was charged with two counts of disorderly conduct after he allegedly harassed two Riverside residents at their home in the 200 block of East Quincy Street at 4:50 a.m. on May 18. According to police, Mough was pounding on the door of the residence, yelling he was “going to kill someone.” He left the scene before police arrived, but was later taken into custody at his home with the assistance of Brookfield police.
Criminal damage? Four cars parked in a lot in the 9500 block of Ogden Avenue, Brookfield, had their tires punctured between 1:45 and 3:30 a.m. on May 22.
