A man was seriously injured Thursday evening after a 17-year-old boy allegedly stabbed him in the neck during an altercation in a forest preserve near Joliet Avenue and 39th Street in unincorporated Riverside Lawn.

Police did not have further information on the victim's condition. He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood where he underwent emergency surgery. He was said to be in his 40s.

According to a police source, at about 5:50 p.m. on June 26, a Lyons police officer was interviewing six subjects at the scene near the boat launch behind Stella's, following up on an unrelated previous incident.

As a second police officer pulled up to the scene, he reportedly observed the 17-year-old punch the victim in the neck.

However, according to police, the boy had stabbed the victim in the neck with what appeared to be a carpet cutter - a long, thin razor blade.

The boy reportedly jumped on a bicycle to flee but was grabbed by a police officer. He was taken into custody and later turned over to Cook County Forest Preserve District police, who directed questions to
a county spokeswoman who was not immediately available.

All of the subjects at scene knew one another and reportedly gather there frequently to drink in the woods.

Their presence reportedly has been particularly disruptive this year, and local police, whose jurisdictions do not include forest preserve land, are seeking help from Cook County to solve the problem.

My guess would be neither, Jane. Just run-of-the-mill junkies, drunks and career criminals who have been shrewd enough to find an under-policed area to shoot-up, drink and brawl.
