The pandemic has made us miss so many things and changed our routines. For many that included the Friday Night Fish Fry at the VFW Hall on Desplaines Avenue in North Riverside catered by Rose’s Catering.

A popular outing, the fish fry offers a reasonably priced menu, which has expanded to include more than fish and socializing, and don’t forget the homemade desserts. The fish fry and the VFW hall, like so many other places, had to close due to the virus which has affected so much in our lives.

However, Rose Zapletal — the Rose in Rose’s Catering — didn’t want to disappoint her customers, who have become her friends. Along with her daughters, Nicole and Michelle and husband Mike, they have been accommodating patrons with a pickup service on Fridays at the VFW.

The carryout service started on March 20 and anyone wishing to see the menu for Friday is asked to go to Rose’s Fish Fry page on Facebook to see the weekly choices. Each menu has three selections for the day, and three selections that can be purchased to warm up for later.

Those placing an order are asked to do so by Wednesday to ensure availability. Hours for the Friday pickup are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and you are given a time to pick up. Safety is primary when picking up at the VFW, so people are expected to be wearing masks and observe six-foot distancing, which is marked on the floor.

Upon entering the VW Hall, you won’t be able to help but notice the table bearing the homemade bakery. Available for purchase is a selection of pies, cakes, and biscotti. I can guarantee the biscotti are truly Italian, and I should know. Ready to help you is Sister Julice from Mater Christi Parish, who will package your goodies up.

The fish fry has been going on for 22 years and no date has been set for it to return on Friday nights. Until then, Rose and family will continue to satisfy you with comfort food through the pickup service.

Rose’s Catering also is at the Brookfield Farmers Market. Reminder, Rose’s Catering takes a break during the month of July for a much-deserved break, so plan ahead.
