Bernard F. Slanec, 81, former longtime North Riversider

Bernard F. Slanec, 81, of LaGrange Park and formerly of North Riverside and Berwyn, died July 9, 2013.

Mr. Slanec grew up in Berwyn and graduated from Morton High School in Cicero. He continued to develop his talents in studio art and liberal arts at DePauw University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa.

Following service in the U.S. Army, he returned to the Chicago area where he pursued a career in finance with manufacturing firms, later joining his brother, Glenn Slanec, in business.

Mr. Slanec married Marilyn Grace in 1960, and the couple moved to North Riverside, where they were residents for 50 years and devoted themselves to raising two daughters and enjoying time with the extended Slanec family.

He was known for his dedication to his family, his sharp intellect, his dry humor, wisdom and his love of gardening, camping and the outdoors.

Mr. Slanec is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marilyn Grace Slanec; his daughters, Linda (Bill) Higgins and Laura Slanec; his grandchildren, Mark Higgins and Eve Higgins; and his brother Glenn (Alice) Slanec.

A memorial service was held July 13 at the Riverside Presbyterian Church. Memorial donations are appreciated to the Alzheimer's Association ( or the American Heart Association (
