The following information was obtained from police reports filed by the Riverside and Brookfield police departments from April 13 through April 18 and represents a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anyone named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. The cases have not yet been adjudicated.
Brookfield police responded to a pair of complaints last week in which vandals damaged above-ground swimming pools and other possessions.
First, during the overnight hours of April 13-14, some used a screwdriver or similar tool to punch eight holes at various levels in the exterior housing and inside plastic liner of a swimming pool in the 3900 block of Grove Avenue, causing the water to drain into the backyard. Damage to the pool was estimated at over $500.
A day later, a resident in the 8900 block of Fairview Avenue reported that the liner to his above-ground pool was damaged when someone poured gasoline into the pool. Damage to the pool was estimated at $400. The wires to several outdoor lights around the resident’s back deck were also cut.
In addition, two vehicles were damaged. A side window was shattered and the soft top torn on a 1968 Pontiac (damage estimated at $1,500), and the windshield was cracked on a 1994 Jeep ($400).
DUI
? Brookfield resident James J. Mannix, 52, was charged with driving under the influence after police allegedly found him behind the wheel of his black 1999 Kia “just staring ahead” while the vehicle was parked in the middle of the 4200 block of Deyo Avenue at 7:43 p.m. on April 16.
Police initially received a call from a witness who reported a man having trouble entering his vehicle at the above location. After police arrived, they found Mannix behind the wheel with the engine of the vehicle running.
After finally acknowledging police, Mannix allegedly told them “he had a few beers tonight.” After failing field sobriety tests, Mannix was arrested. He refused to submit to a breath test. He was also cited for improper parking in a roadway, not wearing a seatbelt and failing to notify the Secretary of State’s Office about a change of address.
? Brookfield police charged Carl R. Farrington, 27, of Brookfield, with driving under the influence after an officer on patrol reported seeing his 1992 Ford heading southbound on DuBois Boulevard in the 4500 block weaving from side to side and nearly striking another vehicle at 1:29 a.m. on April 18.
After the driver reportedly drove through a stop sign at Sahler Avenue, police stopped the vehicle and talked with Farrington, who allegedly said he had just left a local bar where he had been drinking beer. After failing field sobriety tests, he was arrested. He refused a breath test.
He was also cited for disobeying a stop sign and for having an expired registration tag.
Burglary
? A resident of the 4100 block of Forest Avenue, Brookfield, reported that during the overnight hours of April 16-17 someone had entered the garage through an unlocked service door and removed a Raleigh men’s mountain bike valued at $489.
Theft
? A resident of the 3900 block of Elm Avenue, Brookfield, reported to police that some time during the evening hours of April 17 someone removed all four chrome hubcaps from his white 1995 Oldsmobile, which was parked in front of the house.
Criminal damage
? Three vehicles parked in the 4000 block of Grove Avenue, Brookfield, were damaged sometime after midnight on April 17, according to police. All three, a black Nissan, a gray Toyota Carryall and a green Volkswagen had a deep groove etched into the rear quarterpanel by some sort of blunt object.
? A resident of the 3700 block of Rosemear Avenue, Brookfield, reported that his 1992 GMC van had been targeted by vandals for the second time in as many weeks. Back on April 10, someone had smashed the windshield of the vehicle. In the overnight hours of April 16-17, someone broke out the side rear window with a large rock.
A witness said that two men had been fighting in the alley near the vehicle that night, but there’s no evidence connecting the fight with the damage.
