Lyons Township’s Andie Skala took first place in three events at the Hinsdale Central Sectional last week to lead her team to the championship and advance to the IHSA State tournament.
Skala took first in the All-around (38.125), the bars (9.550), and the balance beam (9.400).
The Lions won the sectional with a total score of 145.025, while Riverside Brookfield finished runner-up with a 143.525.
The Lions advance to compete at the IHSA State tournament this Friday and Saturday at Palatine High School.
Friars split in weekend action
The Fenwick boys basketball team fell to a dominant Leo squad 77-57 on Friday, dropping their league record to 3-4. But the Friars rebounded on the following evening to hand Quigley a 68-49 thumping.
In the loss to Leo, Fenwick’s John Comfort scored a team-high 15 points.
Fenwick (13-9, 3-4 Catholic League North) connected on 11 total three-pointers in the win over Quigley. Sophomore Xavier Humphrey nailed four three-pointers to finish with 18 points. Derrek Tartt hit three three-pointers to finish with 10 points, while Nick Caldicott added nine points in the win.
The early round of the state playoffs won’t be an easy task for the Friars, who ended up with the No. 8 seed in the Lyons Township Sectional. Fenwick will open the LaGrange Regional against Nazareth on Feb. 28, and could face No. 1 seed St. Joseph in the championship game on March 2.
“I hope we have something left in the tank come playoff time,” said Quinn. “We’re going to need it.”
The Friars travel to Seton on Friday night (7:30 p.m.) for a Catholic League crossover game.
Williams finishes second
Lyons Township wrestler Tyrand Williams grappled his way to second place at the Carol Stream Wrestling Sectional held at Glenbard North on Saturday.
The senior Williams (33-7) finished second in the 189-pound weight class, and qualified for the state finals to be held in Champaign this weekend.
Viliunas catches fire early
The Lyons Township boys basketball team downed York 55-42 on Saturday.
The Lions (15-7) were led by Ed Viliunas, who scored 17 points, 12 in the first quarter.
Matt Hirt added 14 points and Grant Porter chipped in 11 for Lyons, who travel to Downers Grove North on Friday (7:30 p.m.) and Willowbrook on Saturday (7:30 p.m.).
Babe Ruth registration
Western Conference Babe Ruth Baseball in Brookfield is registering players for the 2007 baseball season. Players, ages 13-18; from Brookfield, Lyons, LaGrange Park, Westchester, North Riverside, Riverside, McCook, Broadview, Berwyn, Stickney, Cicero, Maywood and Forest Park are welcome. Games are played at Ehlert Park in Brookfield.
Registration is Friday, Feb. 16, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 17 from 10 a.m. to Noon at the Brookfield Village Hall in the basement conference room. Registration fees are: Prep Division (13 year olds) $165, Junior Division (14-15 year olds) $180 and Senior Division (16-18 year olds) $190.

Soccer tryouts
The Chicago International Soccer Club of Riverside will hold open tryouts for both boys and girls, ages 8 through 14, on Monday, Feb. 19 at the Riverside Brookfield High School main gym. The tryouts begin at 5:30 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.
Participants must wear indoor soccer shoes, shin guards and bring a soccer ball.
