Fenwick’s up and down baseball season came to an end on Friday with a 3-2 loss to Guerin Prep in the semifinal of the Fenwick Sectional at the Dominican Priory.

Guerin scored all three of its runs in the sixth on four hits.

The Friars, who closed out the season with a 19-16 overall mark, jumped on the board early when Mike Falsetti doubled home Mike Stephany in the third inning. Dan Walsh upped Fenwick’s lead to 2-0 with a solo homer in the fourth.

Newman Delany, who will be a special invite football walk-on at North Carolina in the fall, took the loss for the Friars. The senior allowed three hits and five walks, while striking out one. He closed out his senior year with a record of 3-6 and an ERA of 1.53.

The Yale-bound Walsh finished strong at the plate, hitting homers in the last four games. The senior, who batted .445 with six homers, led the Friars in RBIs with 27. Other notable hitters for the Friars included Reid Rooney and Stephany. Rooney batted to a .373 clip, while Stephany hit .356.

Fenwick began the season with a 9-2 mark before a string of one-run losses put the team in a hole. Towards the end of the season, the Friars were able to rally, winning eight of nine games.

“The nucleus of the team will be intact next year, so I’m real optimistic about the future,” said head coach Dave Hogan, who closes out his 28th year as skipper. “We have a lot of talent and there was a good group of junior pitchers who gained a ton of experience this season. We should be in good shape.”
